Luisenpark (October 8, 2012)

On Monday, October 8, 2012, Reception 1 went to Luisenpark in Mannheim with Reception 2. At the park, we walked (a lot), looked for autumn things, saw many birds, animals, and insects, and had a great day! Special thanks to Julie Depla and Diana Hatz for joining us at the park.

Waiting for the Strassenbahn

The tram was late and filled with double the people

but we squeezed in

shared seats

and enjoyed the ride!

We crossed the bridge over the Neckar River

and walked alongside the park

We saw bright green parrots in the trees

and looked for fall leaves and other things

One bird stayed near us (until he got chased)

but then he came back

We found mushrooms of different kinds

and we picked up anything that reminded us of autumn

We looked under trees and found chestnuts

and an earthworm

Flamingoes

and caterpillars!

The coat carriers (so kind)

and the otters

A shark pool

Wow!

Little people need a boost sometimes

To see the big lizards inside!

The desert tortoise lives longer than a human!

October is here! (October 1-5, 2012)

CLICK HERE TO HEAR SOME OKTOBERFEST MUSIC (and watch your child dance):

This week in Reception 1, we talked about October, Tag der Einheit (Reunification Day), and Oktoberfest. We constructed and colored German flags, colored O K T O B E R F E S T letters to decorate our wall, colored, cut and constructed Oktoberfest mini-musicians, and we made pretzels out of modeling clay. We learned to dance the Chicken Dance (beaks, wings, tail feathers), and we ate pretzels, all to celebrate October being here. All month long it will be October, and all month long we will be doing fun October activities!

Mr. Bernard talks about how there were two Germanys and shows his East German flag.

Now there is one Germany

and one flag.

This guy can be turned into a moving, dancing accordion player!

LEARNING IS FUN!

We colored fall things in different amounts
to talk about Numbers 1-5.

Scarecrows, pumpkins, squirrels, American
footballs, apples and leaves: all signs of autumn.

When Devi got done coloring, she wrote numbers
on the back of each picture card.

Lani counts her pictures in sequential order.

Making pretzels out of Play-Dough!
(Later, we ate real pretzels for snack.)

 We love playing with clay!
