Pumpkins (October 8-12, 2012)

PUMPKINS!

This week in Reception 1, we talked about pumpkins: their shape, their colors, how heavy they are, what they look like, and what we can do with pumpkins. We cut out pumpkins with Mr. Bernard, and we made pumpkin puzzles with popsicle sticks (challenging).

We watched a video story book called Pumpkin Feels Lonely, which you can watch with your child here:

Colorful pumpkins in the Weinheim Marktplatz (Ms. Kristina never saw white or blue pumpkins before!)

We also continued to talk about October and autumn, and we sang our fall songs to help us learn.  Here is a video of Joshua, "belting out" our "October "song (lyrics below video). Joshua is usually one of the first to memorize words to songs and sing them loudly. Good job, Joshua!

October
(to the tune of "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt")

Come rake a giant pile of leaves
In October when they fall
When leaves turn red and brown
And pumpkins all around
Then it's October in the fall!

Miss Jolian returned from her trip to Norway and Sweden,
and we were lucky to have show and tell on Tuesday morning.

After show and tell, we looked at all the fall things we found in Luisenpark on Monday.
It was our job to find things in our bags that no one else had, and tell the class about them.

Alessandra dumped her things onto a tray.

Partners Lani and Sylvie look together to find neat stuff.

Mika shows us the outer covering of a chestnut!

Partners Joshua and Jacob talk about their loot with Lani.

Mika looks over his fall objects.

Cody found a mushroom.

 Alessio found a seed pod!

Devi found a caterpillar (but we left him at the park).

Look at all our loot! We saved the chestnuts.
We will decorate our room with them later this fall.

We did a fall crossword puzzle together on the board.
Ms. Kristina gave us the clues, and we gave her the answers,
identifying pictures and sounding out words.
We told her what letters to write. Learning is fun!

 Making pumpkins with Mr. Bernard
Greta can cut very well!

 Pumpkins are heavy!

Our friends help us when we need it.

Lani picks up the pumpkin one-handed!

 Jacob shows his immense strength.

 Girls have strong muscles, too!

Gavrusha wields the pumpkin with ease.

This is NOT a pumpkin, but Devi peeled it herself!

 Lani and Lucie are friends.

We LOVE to color and draw!

Joshua makes a line of rubber duckies

 Greta builds another masterful creation.

And finally...
Someone was so frightened of spiders and rats
while we watched "Charlotte's Web," she had to have
a blanket to hide behind!
