People of the World (April 22-26, 2013)

In Reception 1 this week, we talked about people around the world, and how they are all different. People in different countries do many things differently: they live in different kinds of homes, they eat different foods, they wear different clothes. We talked about different ways people communicate, our skin colors, hair colors, eye colors and how every single one of us is different from one another.

Monday was Earth Day, and we remembered ways to take care of the earth. Making globes reminds us that we are just one small part of a big world.

This week, the Horses learned different ways people eat, by practicing with chopsticks and cotton balls. They also got to color pictures of different houses from around the world.

The Tigers drew portraits of one another, so they could see how just different each of them is from other friends in class. We have black hair, brown hair, blond hair, brown eyes, green eyes, dark skin, light skin.

Miss Jolian reads her book, A Giggly Gaggle of Friends

It's all about how our friends are all different, and
how we look different from each other.

We love listening to Miss Jolian read!

We are all different. We are very lucky to be in a class with so many
different children from different parts of the globe!

The Tigers reviewed the Letter E this week (for "earth" and the vowel sound in the world "people") and the Horses worked with the Letter H, for "hula," "Hawaii," and "house."

H is for Hula!

Gavrusha can also write the Letter H

MATH

For math, the Horses were given different colors of Play-Doh with toothpicks
sticking out of them, depending on the number Miss Jolian held up and its color.
They then had to put that many Cheerios on the matching Play-Doh!
Afterward, they were allowed to eat their Cheerios.

The Tigers worked on filling in missing numbers 1-10, and then 1-20, if they had time. First we did problems on the board, and then the children filled in worksheets with missing numbers. This may seem like a simple task, but it is difficult! Last time we tried this, it was very hard for most of the Tigers. This time, however, everyone was able to use their skills, count and find out the missing numbers. The Tigers also had to make sure they wrote the numbers correctly (not backwards).

Also this week, to help with number recognition, small motor skills, and social play, we played lots of Go Fish -- a card game where each player must collect cards to make pairs. Playing cards with your kids is a great way to teach them many things!

C.A.R.E. AWARDS
The last Friday of each month is when the bronze, silver and gold awards are handed out. Reception 1 students took home many awards. We are proud of them!
