The Solar System (April 29-May 3, 2013)

This week in Reception 1, we learned about the solar system, sun, and planets.

The Tigers learned the names of all the planets, that the sun is a star, and about the different characteristics identifying each planet. We also learned that all the planets are named after Greek gods. We learned the nicknames for some of the planets and how certain planets are like earth, and how they are all so different. We learned which planets are the coldest and hottest, which have the most mountains and volcanoes, which planets have rings, and what those planets and rings are made up of.

An interesting web series your child may like is the "Space Race" series on Youtube. We watched all of the Space Race videos in the Tiger group. The link to Episode 1 is:

The Horses learned about the sky and the universe, and the difference between day and night, and where the stars, sun and moon are. From Miss Jolian:

"This week the horses learned about planets since planets are broad topic we briefly touched the basic things in our universe that we know like the sun moon stars... I need it to explain to the children where space was how we get there in a rocketship we have to go past the clouds pass the stars and into space... After the children learned that we cannot breathe up there that we have to wear a special helmet they had much fun making their helmets... Then using math we put a rocketship together I labeled each piece woth a number this taught the children first second third category ... Then we made edible toast but not just any toast star toast the children have fun putting the Nutella on it and eating it ... "

HAPPY BIRTHDAYS!!!

Though it was a short week this week, we had two birthdays in one day! Joshua celebrated his 5th birthday on May 1st -- a holiday -- and Gavrusha celebrated his 4th birthday the same day! Then we had an in-class celebration for each, during snacktimes. We also sang to the boys during assembly and in class, on Thursday.

ASSEMBLY

Reception 1 was also in charge of assembly this week. We sang several songs, including "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly" (with original artwork), performed by the Tigers, "A Spring Poem" with "Rain, Rain Go Away," performed by the Horses, and "Estrellita" and "Zimzalabim," sung in Spanish and German, respectively. We also taught the rest of the school one of our favorite songs, "What I Am."  Wow, we're good!

A few of us even got C.A.R.E. awards this week!

We are proud!

and we cheer each other on...
