Teeth and the Letter T (February 25 - March 1, 2013)

This week in Reception 1, the Horses and the Tigers talked about teeth, and how we can take good care of our teeth.

The Horses worked with Miss Jolian and Miss Burnell learning about how germs stay on our hands (and teeth). They also made mouthfuls of teeth and learned about brushing.

Mouths assembled by the Horses...
they glued on Q-tip teeth so fast!

The Tigers made small books to read about how to have a healthy smile. They also colored white "teeth," then brushed off the stains with toothbrushes. (We will keep the teeth in our classroom to stain and brush for fun later.)

Questions to ask your Tiger (older R1 students):

1. What should we do at least twice a day to keep our teeth clean? (brush)
2. Who should we visit twice a year to have a healthy smile? (dentist)
3. What kinds of foods should we eat to have a healthy smile? (dairy products, crunchy foods like carrots and apples, foods without a lot of sugar)
4. What can we do once a day to clean in between our teeth? (floss)
5.  What is a cavity? What does the dentist do to fix a cavity? (a cavity is a bad spot on your tooth caused by too much sugar or not enough brushing. A dentist can drill into the cavity and fill it.)

Every R1 student got a new toothbrush to take home!

THE LETTER T
The Horses and the Tigers talked about the letter T this week. In Miss Burnell's room, the Horses also did the letter B. For practice, you could ask your child to say words that begin with these letters. On Wednesday, we watched Sesame Street videos about the letter T in the R1 room. Miss Jolian and Ms. Kristina drew a WHOLE BUNCH of T pictures for the kids to color. Reception 1 is fun (for teachers AND kids)!

Allegra colored a T for tiger picture, and she WROTE HER NAME!

Greta wrote her name as well!

WOW! What an accomplishment!
